The Healthiest Sleeping Positions, According to a Chiropractor

If waking involves a stiff neck and sore shoulders, you may want to stay in bed and you should probably consider seeing a chiropractor. At Bond Thomas Chiropractic in St. Petersburg, we know that how you sleep can cause discomfort. Though there is no hard and fast rule, we have some information about the healthiest sleeping positions for your spine.

On Your Back

After a sunny day on the beaches of St. Petersburg, you’re ready to turn in. When you do, lie on your back; this is great for the head, neck and spinal column because you maintain the primary curvature of the cervical spine. A chiropractor will tell you that this is the healthiest resting position for the spine; unless snoring is an issue, this is a habit you should aim to get into. By aligning and keeping the vertebrae neutral, there is no added pressure. Further benefits include the decrease of acid reflux, breakouts, and facial wrinkles. If you want to enhance this pose, place a small pillow under the arch of the back.

On Your Side

Lying on your side is the second best option. This arrangement keeps the spine elongated and is helpful for anyone experiencing obstructive sleep apnea. Arms at your side, like a soldier’s stance, are best because the vertebrae are supported in the spine’s natural curve. If your arms are out or one is underneath your head, be aware that this can cause shoulder and arm pain due to restricted blood flow and pressure on nerves. Our chiropractors in St. Petersburg suggest placing a pillow between the knees.

Fetal Position

This pose is one of the most common, but chiropractors recognize it is one of the worst for the spinal column. When the body is curled inward, the natural alignment of the back isn’t bolstered and breathing can be restricted. By reducing the curl of the body into a straighter line, patients in St. Petersburg have noticed less strain on the neck.

On Your Stomach

This is reportedly the worst choice because it does not reinforce the primary curvature of the spine. Pressure is placed on the joints and muscles, which often irritates nerves, and strain is placed on the neck for hours at a time. We see that many prefer this position, despite its reputation; by placing a pillow under the hips, you can better support your joints. You may consider taking away your head pillow.
